FAMILY VS. MERIT IN CHINESE CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS
引用评语
In the early nineteenth century, Hsu Sung undertook the monumental
task of reconstituting the T'ang lists from fragmentary references in surviving literature. The resulting Te"ng-k'o-chik'ao,completed in 1838, is necessarily far from a complete reconstructionof the T'ang lists. It contains only a scattering of names for any single year, and few or no data on the candidates' background.
While invaluable for a study of the T'ang examinations, the information
it affords is too slender to throw much light on the social background of the average T'ang official.
