Gorbachev and His Glasnost
After reading his news anthology "Reporting", it's no surprise for me that David Remnick's journalism dexterity would bring forward such a mesmerizing rendition of Soviet Union's fatal days of glasnost as in his massive tome "Lenin's Tomb", lucid, full of exquisite details and personal touches yet with no intrusive whims at all. What did surprise me was Mr. Remnick's willingness, at great risk of his own safety, to plunge into the darkness of a decrepit coal pit along with scruffy miners so as to fathom their despair in a stagnant Soviet Union. The shocking endeavor, tremendously inspiring as well, was immediately reminiscent of Gorge Orwell who wrote an essay "Down the Mine" about the Britain's coal industry in 1930s. David Remnick is just as classic as well. He is now New Yorker editor, a position that can't be more befitting of his consummate writing.
An unexpected moment of delight came in the book when Mr. Remnick prayed for God's forgiveness after he parroted his host's toast to none other than Lenin's ideological successor, Stalin.
Nevertheless an exhilarating reading experience, one wonders how the current Chinese ruling elites would make sense of Mr. Remnick's observation. Surely no princelings want to be China's Gorbachev, and the current leadership has already made that point crystal-clear. Will Chinese communists come to their reckoning? If, when? And then, who will be the next Mr. Remnick to write "Mao's Tomb"?
