Initially when I pick up the book I thought it was about the snow leopard or at least about people in Central Asia…… but it turns out to be all about the authors experience in Nepal and North India and his thoughts on Buddhism,….. But it turns through Matthiessen’ book I finally start to understand the land I’m familiar with yet never really understand
About different people like sherpas, magar, Mongolia pony person who practice Shamanism, others and trekking situations like blizzard in Nepal and the river of Brahmaputra 。。
Lots of vocabulary I don’t understand, so I heavily relied on Google for the first half of book…. I learned about the place of Varanasi….where the Buddha originates from and the source of East Asian spirit of Ganges infatuation…..and cannibalism on the burning ghat….. 。。。
Then the author said about Zen Buddhism Japanese Buddhism and how other East Asian Buddhism are actually one branch of the tantric Buddhism from Tibet….. out of all the branches of Buddhism like Chinese Guan yin is Avalokita a female presence, and Japanese Kanin of neutral sex in tantric worship of female energies, and Matthiessen noticed such phenomenon in Hinduism and Buddhism.
before reading this book I always thought Buddhism is strictly ascetic,… but it turns tantric Buddhism believe sex wine feasting as channeling of energies to “spiritual growth”…..and lose of self identity? To understand the existence and some blah blah in universe? Tantric Buddhism also embrace consumption of human flesh as an “embrace of all existence”……(wtf….) Matthiessen interprets this as the earliest form of human’s religious intuition….
Matthiessen also commented that Buddhism changed its direction in the 16th century led by Dalai Lama and nyingma? Actually in 11th century, they started the Kagyu sect? Of kalachkra? circle of time, lord of death（sounds like nihilism?) , “journey to Shambala”, wearing skulls and human skins, also perceived as Mahakala/time? Mahakala is symbolized by priest’s holding of a skull cup full of blood to admonish people to abandon their past and worldly existence of Samsara? In order to reborn? while at the same time (16th century?) the mongols conquered northern India and killed all the tantrists by using elephants to crush them to death……
。。。 About different concepts and gods in Buddhism like wheel of dharma…kalachakra “tiger god”, samantabhadra, Parma sambhava(wtf is all these names? Their Chinese translation is even worse) avalokita in lotus, dorje(vajradhara) or thunderbolt that symbolize energy and Tibetan Buddha who transmitted dharma to tilopa, to Naropa? To Lama Maria….. the process of reincarnation…….
