The First Dandelion

Simple and fresh and fair from winter's close emerging,
As if no artifice of fashion, business, politics, had ever been,
Forth from its sunny nook of shelter'd grass--innocent, golden, calm as the dawn,
The spring's first dandelion shows its trustful face.
纯朴,清新,美丽,寒冬结束时出现,
好像这世界从没有过时尚,交易和政治阴谋,
从荫蔽草丛中照到阳光的角落冒出——天真,金黄,宁静如黎明,
春天的第一朵蒲公英露出它深信的脸。
这是惠特曼1988年年近60岁写的一首诗。他用自然界的纯朴,清新,美丽,和人类社会复杂、肮脏、丑陋作鲜明对比。读了这首诗,使人们感到周围的世界清新可爱,世间的烦恼一扫而去。惠特曼的诗于1919年被介绍给中国,对中国新诗界有很大影响。按苏雪林的说法:“像《女神》之剽窃惠特曼之馀绪,弄得卤莽决裂,不可响迩。”(我所认识的诗人徐志摩)此乃一家之言,是否属实,我们留存待考。不过,郭没落晚年的人品一点也不纯朴、天真。难怪连鲁迅七十年前骂为流氓加秀才!
