Lily is haunted by memories-of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower, and asks the gods for forgiveness. In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu ("women's writing"). Some girls were paired with laotongs, "old sames, " in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. With the arrival of a silk fan on which Snow Flower has composed for Lily a poem of introduction in nu shu, their friendship is sealed and they become "old sames" at the tender age of seven. As the years pass, through famine and rebellion, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their lifelong friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a brilliantly realistic journey back to an era of Chinese history that is as deeply moving as it is sorrowful. With the period detail and deep resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha, this lyrical and emotionally charged novel delves into one of the most mysterious of human relationships: female friendship.
Foot size would determine how marriageable I was. My small feet would be offered as proof to my prospective in-laws of my personal discipline and my ability to endure the pain of childbirth, as well as whatever misfortunes might lie ahead. My small feet would show the world my obedience to my natal family, particularly my mother, which would also make a good impression on my future mother-in-law. The shoes I embroidered would symbolize to my future in-laws my abilities at embroidery and thus other house learning. And, though I knew nothing of this at the time, my feet would be something that would hold my husband's fascination during the most private and intimate moments between a man and a woman. (查看原文)
The footbinding part was pretty well-written though. I seriously couldn't feel from my knees down and so wanna threw up either from the sickness or the smothering temperature. 那天跟室友小白人去coolidge corner一家以前没有发现的书店买了四本书,回来发现除了...

I was reading the second half of this book on the plane from shanghai to london. I couldn't help my tears ever since the last time lily received the fan from snowflower and assumed that snowflower had betrayed their old same relationship. Not that I was tou...

After the last two hours of final sit to finish the novel, I am now completely melted in lily’s regret over Snow Flower. I have to admit that the writer really did a way gorgeous work in the fiction structure building, and searching on-the-edge-of-extincti...

Both Lily and Snow Flower were as distorted as their small feet. Born as women, they both were hurt by the foot-binding and other women's traditions of the inner realm -- variations of the same story. Just like Snow Flower, who needed her lies and pride to ...

the plot development is a little bit tedious and slow as long as i'm concerned. Alos writing about chinese culture, Amy Tan's books always kept me in suspense and expect. i read about half of this novel, and kept it at that.
