整部作品解构了宏大叙事，质疑历史的真实性和客观性，叙述者通过讲述个人故事和家族故事开启了一场回忆之旅，追溯自己以及妻子如今生活状况的原因，结果还是以失败告终……在新历史主义者看来，历史并非线性和进步性的，也不是客观化的。坐着通过叙述者之口表达了自己的历史观，即历史是故事，历史是循环的。作品的叙述手法和观点都很有启发意义。

奇特的叙事方式，三个年代交叉进行讲述，意识流小说里面难得有完整情节的，故事本身也好看。

关于人类最深刻的恐惧，对逝去的记忆，垂死的世界本身——篇篇都涉及大问题，却讲的分外温柔，悲伤，仿佛恋人絮语。

即将退休的历史老师讲自己的家乡，英国的芦苇荡这片小的地方和上面和自己insignificant的家族在的宏大的历史叙事中的百年变迁，还有一些很有趣的tangent比如泥鳅的历史，ouse河的历史，想法我很喜欢，新历史主义就是好，历史和革命不只是大人物的专属，这片小小的芦苇荡上人们的事情，河流本身和泥鳅也应该是历史；感觉蛮80年代的，因为80s是最乐观最向前看的年代，历史老师男主被辞退也是这个原因，... 即将退休的历史老师讲自己的家乡，英国的芦苇荡这片小的地方和上面和自己insignificant的家族在的宏大的历史叙事中的百年变迁，还有一些很有趣的tangent比如泥鳅的历史，ouse河的历史，想法我很喜欢，新历史主义就是好，历史和革命不只是大人物的专属，这片小小的芦苇荡上人们的事情，河流本身和泥鳅也应该是历史；感觉蛮80年代的，因为80s是最乐观最向前看的年代，历史老师男主被辞退也是这个原因，在那个高速发展的年代历史变得不重要了，感觉作者对此还蛮伤感的，所以全篇男主有很多在讲历史重要性的地方；Swift的文笔好像喃喃的絮语，悲伤无力的感觉塑造的很好，但就是读起来有点吃力...但剧情蛮狗血的，作者绝对是看了百年孤独，英国80s的作者感觉都蛮受外来文化的影响的 (展开)
