Allen reveals the unity of Plato’s intentions in the Symposium, explores the dialogue’s major themes, and links them with Plato’s other dialogues. His wide-ranging commentary includes discussions of Greek religious, social, and sexual practices, the conceptual connections between the Symposium and Freud, the influence of the Symposium on later writers, and recent scholarship on the dialogue. 翻译和疏解都极好！尤其疏解部分插入了不少古希腊思想背景的澄清以及对柏拉图对话一些基本问题的议论，特别适合新手入门。另外，作者怼起人来毫不手软，vlastos, nussbaum和cornford一个都不放过哈哈哈……
