Written in the grip of suicidal depression, Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life is an uplifting account of what makes life worth living. Yiyun Li interweaves personal experiences of her childhood in China and her adulthood forging a new life in America with meditations on the many writers she admires - from William Trevor to Katherine Mansfield, Virginia Woolf to Ivan Turgenev. And with quiet integrity, she confirms the fundamental questions that define an author - why write? And why live?

Like Double-sides fried egg

What is abysmal is that one’s erratic language closes on one as quicksand. Yet what is spoken by others—truth as cliché, cliché as the only truth—is as indisputable as the retreating solid ground, getting further and further beyond reach. The abyss is that time is annulled by language. We can kill time, but language kills us.

I must have underlined one-third of the book. Are these her thoughts or mine? The line is blurry.

读完之后那句“By being addicted to fatalism, one can look calm, capable and even happy.” 读完之后那句“By being addicted to fatalism, one can look calm, capable and even happy.”
