Dans le développement de la critique d'art humaniste, trois orientations majeurs se sont désormais dessinées. La première, qui se rattache à Cicéron et à Pétraque, est à la base de toutes les considérations humanistes sur la peinture: centrée sur l'analogie entre la peinture et la littérature, elle exploit un bagage restreint de catégories et de différenciations néoclassiques. Plus localisée, la seconde, qui dérive de Pline, consiste à percevoir l'histoire de l'art moderne comme une série d'artistes qux capacités et aux qualités individualisées; elle produisit une appréhension ttès solidement structurée de l'art florentin du début du XIVe siècle, mais elle n'eut pas de suite au XV e. Baxandall的第一本书，这本书是他当年在institut de warburg里研究的一本著作，其实也奠定了他之后研究的方法，用时代之眼，当年的humainisme的角度去看待以及评价quattrocento。
