In the early 1980s, a rebellion against Hafez al-Assad's secular regime took hold in the central city of Hama, led by Sunni Islamists who chafed at being ruled by the Alawite minority. Assad's forces responded by pounding the city with artillery, before bringing in bulldozers to raze entire neighborhoods. Nobody knows how many people were killed, but it is estimated to be in the tens of thousands.
