作者认为民族认同不仅仅是语言文化的不同，最根本的是社会秩序的不同所造就的边界。关于身份认同，Baily （2007）举的例子很好理解，self-ascription是x，other-ascription也是x，这个人才能被有效定义为x。但是个人认同也好，他人认同也好，随着时间地点对话者不断改变。
