威尔弗雷德·坎特韦尔·史密斯是美国哈佛大学“比较宗教史”专来荣誉退休教授。早年曾任加拿大麦吉尔大学伊斯兰研究所主任及比较宗教学教授，后转赴美国哈佛在学任教。在哈佛大学曾担任“世界宗教研究中心”与“宗教研究委员会”主任达九年之久。史密斯博士一生著述甚丰，其中包括《现代历史中的伊斯兰》（1957）、《宗教真理问题》（1967）、《信念与历史》（1977）、《信仰与信念》（1979）、《走向一种世界神学》（1981）、《宗教多样性》（1982）、《何为圣经？》（1993）等。
