I define writing as a system of graphic signs to note and record information that in its complete expression came to record language. However, I do not believe that primary writing systems (like Chinese) came into being expressly for the purpose of language representation. In fact, I am convinced that they were generated by the necessity to keep track of data in visual form and that only at a later stage they absorbed language.
