To Win or To Lose?

Today I got an email message from one of my old friends, and she told me she is laid off effective 1/1/2007 by her company that she has been working for a straight 10 years. I was appalled about the sad news, and having a look at Yahoo!, I found the NASDAQ listed high-tech company’s market cap is now only around $500 million, with its share price as low as slightly higher than $1 per share. The company had its prime time years ago when the Internet industry had its good day. My friend started to work for the company with a H1B visa, and later on was awarded green card, promoted to be a Director, all the way up from Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, and Manager. Working in the US industry, it is rare for a professional to working for a company for such long period without a job-hopping.
I feel really sorry about my friend with such bad news, and I told her that, it is not her company’s fault. Just like a government, or a family, business can survive or thrive only when achieving break-even. Laying-off employees are almost the last resort that the top management has to pursue. It’s the market that decides your success and failure, and if you do not perform well, your competitors will get in and replace you. It is sort of hash, but it is the rule of the game, you have to get along with it
To win or to lose? We in business should constantly remind ourselves that the road towards success and failure are just inches away instead of miles away, so again drive safe and take care!
