特鲁约曾任约翰斯·霍普金斯大学克里格-艾森豪威尔（Krieger-Eisenhower）杰出人类学教授和全球文化与历史研究所所长，跨文化研究者，曾获古根海姆人文科学奖。1998年进入芝加哥大学，任人类学和社会科学教授。他勇于打破学科间的界限，综合不同的思想谱系，通过对政治经济、社会和文化研究中关于概念和数据的二分法进行历史化和语境化。他的研究影响了人类学、社会学和历史学等诸多领域的学者，被认为是“学术界颇具原创性、学科性、创新性和深思熟虑的声音之一，因为他的理论框架扩展了加勒比研究中的社会科学知识”。2011年，加勒比哲学协会授予他弗朗茨·法农（Frantz Fanon）终身成就奖，“以表彰他在人文科学，特别是人类学和历史学方面的创造性”。著有《全球转型：人类学与现代世界》（Global Transformations: Anthropology and the Modern World，2004）、《农民与资本：世界经济中的多米尼克》（Peasants and Capital: Dominica in the World Economy，1988）等。《沉默的过去》是他的代表作品。

完全改变了我看待历史的方式。历史是一个纯粹人为的举动，是从一堆archive里选取出document，然后组成线性的历史。太多被人为忽略的document了。
