A woman's teenage son takes his own life. It is incomprehensible. The woman is a writer, and so she attempts to comprehend her grief in the space she knows best: on the page, as an imagined conversation with the child she has lost. He is as sharp and funny and serious in death as he was in life itself, and he will speak back to her, unable to offer explanation or solace, but not yet, not quite, gone.
Where Reasons End is an extraordinary portrait of parenthood, in all its painful contradictions of joy, humour and sorrow, and of what it is to lose a child.

Perfect. Imperfect. A pair of adjectives that come over and over again, in all seasons, day in and day out, taunting us, judging us, isolating us, turning our isolation into illness. Is there a more accoplished adjective than perfect? Perfect is free from comparison, perfect rejects superlative. We can always be good, do better, try our best, but how perfect can we be before we can love ourselves and let others love us? And who, my dear child, has taken the word lovable out of your dictionary and mine, and replaced it with perfect?
I wish you had made me an enemy, I said, rather than yourself. Mothers, I thought, would be perfect for that role.
You can't be that for me, Mommy, Nikolai said. I've found a perfect enemy in myself. (查看原文)
I don’t like making friends with older people. Besides, one can’t really be friends with one’s mother.
Can one not?
No. The essence of growing up is to play hide-and-seek with one’s mother successfully, Nikolai said.
All children win, I said. Mothers are bad at seeking.
You did find me.
Not as your mother, I said. Don’t you notice the sign there (though I knew he couldn’t have—I had hung it up while talking with him): Do not let mother dear find us.

Mommy, you know, I only want to be perfect, but I can't. I have tried so hard, but I can't make it. Too much too much suffering.
全文都是对话体,所以非常好读。喜欢里面的每一个pun, 每一句sarcasm. 既坦诚又聪明,这就是我最最最想要的。
对李翊云从不社交这件事又多理解了一些,之前觉得是她太自律了,现在看来普通社交对她来说太无聊了,如果她能拥有的都是这么有趣的对话。(展开)
Poetic conversations start from the end of reasons I wanted to review Where Reasons End, but my words always fell short. I wanted to say that this is a profoundly-touching book, but I also fear that I am abusing adjectives. It is a book that opens with Elis...

Where reasons end是Yiyun Li在十六岁的大儿子毫无征兆地自杀后写作的,写的是一个母亲和死去的儿子Nicolai的对话,在一个没有时间没有视觉仅有声音的地方 Yiyun Li另有一本回忆录叫Dear Friend, from my life I write to you in your life: 她这样解释这个题目: The books on...

Yiyun Li 的Where Reasons End今年听了多少遍? Cassandra Campbell的声音当然是好的。Nikolai那种少年人的刻薄和伤心,mother dear(you have to get the name right when you find the person hard to endear)的探寻、不放心......和无可避免的sorrow。Audible上那么多narrato...

Technically speaking, this is not a novel. It is an imaginary conversation between a heart-broken mother and her teenage son who took his own life. Li is really obsessed with the etymology of words and her argument with her son resolves so much around words...
