Hannay is in London when he suddenly finds himself caught up in a dangerous situation and the main suspect for a murder committed in his own flat. He is forced to go on the run to his native Scotland. AUTHBIO: John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, was a Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet and novelist. He wrote adventure novels, short-story collections and biographies. His passion for the Scottish countryside is reflected in much of his writing. Buchan's adventure stories are high in romance and are peopled by a large cast of characters. Richard Hannay, Dickson McCunn and Sir Edward Leithen are three that reappear several times. Alfred Hitchcock adapted his most famous book The Thirty-Nine Steps for screen.
When Richard Hannay returns from a long stay in Africa, he becomes caught up in a sensational plot to precipitate a pan-European war. After a corpse is found in his flat, Hannay flees the attentions of both the conspirators and the law, and a manhunt ensues.

虽然给三星是因为在各种剧集充斥的今天，这本小说情节实在有点过于小儿科，但是相信在当时是很新颖的一种题材，文学史上还是有举足轻重的意义。

文笔不错，故事太业余了。应该是我读过最业余的悬疑……剧情太不适合当做小说来读了，或许电影作为载体还更合适些。然而我还是不觉得它是 classic material，如果电影是经典，那希区柯克太弔了。
