The Angel Esmeralda
好喜欢Midnight和Starveling,像是姊妹篇,spectators of spectators,层层嵌套,绝大篇幅里无事发生,until it explodes, and still goes nowhere in its ruins.

Booker prize选这本书的用意蛮清晰 - 在这个充满conflict和suffering的世界, let’s turn our gaze towards an outer-space, birds’ eyes’ view, pure and untainted beauty. The beauty of the Earth, existence, our Earth, our existence.

An Introduction to Gödel's Theorems
看完Gödel without too many tears顺手也来补充了一些这里的延展内容。 Church-Turing thesis, Entscheidungsproblem, Turing machine, the nature of computation, and the impressive squeezing argument that formally pins down the intuitive notion of computation.

The MANIAC
What an ambitious book, A mad dream of reason indeed. 好喜欢写Ehrenfest的前传,结构妙极了,a literal circular ruins of an epoch of political and scientific craziness. von Neumann, the most inhuman human intelligence giving birth to a truly inhuman intelligence,

Gödel Without (Too Many) Tears
最近因为闲着在看von Neumann回来研究了一下Gödel,这本小册子绝对是one of the most accessible and useful handbooks of his incompleteness proof (and its ramifications). It’s a shame that Peter Smith the person is such a scum and falls so far from measuring up to his work…

Truth and Objectivity
Deep and searching. When Wright emerges out of Dummett.

Intermezzo
Hands down her best work till now… 喜欢她的new style,写Peter的章节,flowing, on the confusion a veneer of swimming light. 喜欢the tenderness and warmth of it. SR一直讲how interpersonal relationships form us, 这本写这个母题尤其清晰动人。How we’re at once made better and worse, and in any case *made*, in the presence of others. Aching almost.

Consequences Of Pragmatism
Introduction最有意思,feels right that he took Nagel and Cavell (rather than Kripke and Dummett) as pragmatism’s interesting opponent。但当他写他的pragmatism as ethnocentrism,当他present his answer to the charge of relativism and irrationalism, 如果去对比Bernard Williams的相似篇章,就觉得Rorty还是有点simplistic, simplifying。

Orlando
这版的插画也太美了!idea很酷很先锋,笔法很细很绵密 (也觉得自己配不上做她的读者),Woolf的好完全认得,但也不太是我的菜;don’t have the taste for the old-fashioned deliberate dramas and pretences put on by the ‘biographer’, they do nothing for a modern sensibility like mine. (Orlando asked as much: Why not simply say what one means and leave it?)

Atomised
No it doesn’t work for me at all. The philosophy’s so fishy - I can’t see any half-good philosopher taking this book very seriously. And the sex, idk, yes it’s so deliberately depressing, but being depressing isn’t the same thing as being deep…

The History of Sexuality Volume 1
讲得多好:it’s not about whether you say yes or no to sex, but account for a discursive fact that it’s thus spoken about; not (simply) whether sex is repressed or not, but trace the complex texture of power that’s woven into it. Truly very liberating to think along this line!

A Heart So White

Against Marriage

Power and Freedom in the Space of Reasons

Death in Venice
Aschenbach, the ash river: all the discipline, self-mastery, ‘a closed fist always’, burnt up into ashes at the sight of beauty. (To say beauty is truth and stop, rather than to eat it.) Who ever wants soberness in intoxication? One only wants soberness in soberness.
