作为美国早期环保运动领袖，缪尔关于大自然探险的随笔与专著多年以来广为流传。他帮助保护了约塞米蒂山谷等荒原，并创建了美国最重要的环保组织山岭环保俱乐部（The Sierra Club）。在他的影响下，罗斯福总统于其任期内批准创建了五十三个野生动物保护区、十六个国家纪念保护区和六个国家公园，缪尔也因此被誉为“美国国家公园之父”。

有些不习惯书中对着雄美的山景风光处处称颂上帝，但是面对千姿百态的自然，神圣的感觉是很容易发生，也能够被理解的。
