算是一本科普读物,不过作者除此之外写的是柯勒律治和雪莱的传记。。。但是写得确实好看

我挺喜欢这本书的,尤其Hershel兄妹那几章。上课时老师不断强调这是本trade book trade book trade book, 把它与学术著作分得很开,我不否认这本书受到其目标受众的限制,但至少我所追求的所谓学术,没有这么严格的专业与科普的界限,这种界限抹灭的恰是amateur所体现的对事物本真的热爱,而这种热爱也恰是the age of wonder中所有主人公的共性。

印象最深的两点:Humphry Davy死后,皇家学会一路没落,其原因是因为杂七杂八的人员太多,只有一成的人发表过正式的科学论文。另外一点,John Herschel激励达尔文要做 independent working scientist, Charles Lyell让达尔文不要接受任何正式的科学职位,才能心无旁骛地研究。对于今天的我们,成为独立研究人员几乎不可能,只能随波逐流,而看到科学像当年... 印象最深的两点:Humphry Davy死后,皇家学会一路没落,其原因是因为杂七杂八的人员太多,只有一成的人发表过正式的科学论文。另外一点,John Herschel激励达尔文要做 independent working scientist, Charles Lyell让达尔文不要接受任何正式的科学职位,才能心无旁骛地研究。对于今天的我们,成为独立研究人员几乎不可能,只能随波逐流,而看到科学像当年的皇家学会一样一路没落,倒是惊人的相似。 (展开)
