Travelers by ship from New York to Buenos Aires find that on board with them is the world champion of chess, an arrogant and unfriendly man. They come together to try their skills against him and are soundly defeated. Then a mysterious passenger steps forward to advise them and their fortunes change. How he came to possess his extraordinary grasp of the game of chess and at what cost lie at the heart of Zweig's story.

偷书那段直接看跪下了……拿到书居然还不是直接如饥似渴地开始看，还要憧憬一下书里的内容，打开书后尽管失望最终却仍然将心里无尽的空虚和恨转换成了病态的狂热……最后看犯病那段急得一目十行差点以为要跳海……

简直太好了，一开始还以为主角是Czentovic，结果话锋一转。DR.B狱中的描写令人毛骨悚然地感同身受，文字的力量难以取代。ps企鹅兰登这本小书封皮很好看，购于@上海韬奋西文书局。

封底上茨威格的照片，选得非常的不经典，使我第一眼以为是孙中山。 眼拙眼拙。 茨威格真的是刻画人物心理的大师，我用一句话能带过的心理描写，他可以写一整个chapter,还留有悬念。其实我想到心理描写，第一反应是“霎时一阵暖流涌入心房”…… 不管怎么说，极其值得一看的英文小说，因为书很薄，不会因为耐心不够看不完………… 推荐！
