我们很多人觉得，自己的国家、民族是世界上最重要的，亡国灭族是最可怕的事。这当然没错。但如果站在文明的角度去看，亡国并不一定是最可怕的。雅典亡国了，反而因此撒下了希腊文化的种子。 引自第1页 所见略同！在我们这个传承了几千年的国度里，这样的感悟不多见，由其在当下。为什么宁愿放弃民族？因为看到了更值得坚持的东西----文明前进的方向。
在中世纪的基督徒看来，穆斯林是可恶的人，但正是他们的敌人，才得以让西方最精华的文明保留下来，最终让基督教的神学家们也视之为珍宝。对于文明来说，一国的衰亡并不那么可怕。可怕的是焚书，是毁掉学校，是用暴力消灭言论。打败仗了没关系，只要人民幸福就行。而让人民获得幸福的方法，就在千百万文弱书生舍去生命保护的一本本书、一张张纸中。 敬字惜纸，这不是书呆子话，这是文明之路。 引自第1页
